The commentary on the election results struggles to take the measure of abstention.
This was already the case the day after the second round of municipal elections, June 28, 2020. That day, more than 27 million voters had abandoned the ballot (58.4% abstention).
A year later, the day after the first round of departmental and regional elections, nearly 31 million voters did not take part in the vote, or 66.7% of those registered.

Given the health situation, and in particular thanks to the progress of vaccination, the fear of contamination played only a residual role in this abstention.
Complementary explanatory factors are rightly called upon.
The campaign was crushed by national themes and extreme politicization.
The political class and the parties are subject to a very negative judgment in public opinion, etc.
